Favorite Christmas Treats

I'm sure a lot of you have seen these corn flake cookie wreaths, which happen to be my favorite treat at Christmas! Here's the recipe so you can try them too:

Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter of margarine
30 large marshmallows
1 1/2 teaspoons green food coloring
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
4 cups corn flakes
Red cinnamon candies

In a 2-quart saucepan, melt butter and marshmallows over moderately low heat, stirring constantly. When melted, remove from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon of food color and the vanilla extract. Add more food coloring if desired. Stir in corn flakes. Drop mixture onto wax paper 1 tablespoon at a time. Decorate with red cinnamon candies. Let stand 30 minutes or more until cool.

Simple, Easy, and Sugary...the way I like it!

I Give You The Gift Of...Nothing

Is it weird that Kyle and I haven't exchanged Christmas gifts in over five years? Maybe its the fact that we are always traveling over the holidays, or the fact that we don't really need anything.

I always pride myself on being a good gift-giver. I love shopping for my family and trying to find gifts that will be funny or meaningful to them. But for some reason, the thought of buying gifts for my husband doesn't even cross my mind.

Are we weird? Tell me UnBrides - do all of you exchange gifts at the holidays?

Ali & Cole : 1826 Photographic

When brides come to me for wedding advice, I always say to make it as personal as you can. Your wedding should reflect the type of couple you are, and Ali & Cole's wedding is the epitome of that statement! You can tell by their pictures what a fun-loving couple they are and that there is no doubt they threw an awesome party!

Not only did they get married on a boat by a comedian, but their I Guess I Do moment involves an accident with an ice cream truck. Yes, you read that right. Enjoy Ali's hilarious story in her own words below...
...
I was not a typical bride. I had never really dreamed or thought about what I wanted my wedding day, wedding dress, etc. to look like. All I knew was that I wanted to marry Cole, the love of my life. When we first discussed ideas for what our wedding would be like, we were just throwing out a lot of random ideas.

We were kind of reception experts at this point. We had been to 30+ weddings over the last 3-4 years and we knew what we wanted. Some rip-roarin' rager that was completely out of the box. Cole, I believe jokingly, threw out the idea of having a pig roast in a warehouse at his family’s marina. I thought it was brilliant and we wouldn't have restrictions on our 450+ guest list. We could make it a little more formal but the concept was casual, which matched our personalities better. From there the “out of the box” ideas kept on rolling.

Cole came from a Lutheran family where as I grew up Catholic. We wanted to get married in a place that was both special to us. Cole’s uncle was married at sunset on his parent’s boat out in the middle of Lake Erie a long time ago, which I always thought was a beautiful story. So we intended to get married out on the water where we both had great memories and we both felt God the most but we needed a boat large enough to fit our extended families (over 150 people) who would be traveling from all over to celebrate with us. Then it hit us, the Goodtime! We have had a lot of drunken excursions on that boat (so we knew our families would fit right in) and we are lucky enough to call ourselves family friends with the owner Joe Lamb so what better place to get hitched!

Now to figure out who to marry us. Well that was pretty much a simple story. Cole and I attended a comedy show at Hilarities in downtown Cleveland. Cole pointed out to the current comedian on stage “Hey, that guy is in my volleyball league and he married some of the people I play with.” Me-“you want him to marry us.” Cole- “Sounds great.” Josh (the man who married us)-“I’m in.”

We spent a lot of time planning all of the extra details to our wedding since we were basically building a wedding venue from the ground up. My sister works with some badass teachers who, with a little persuasion at the annual Christmas get together, agreed to be our bartenders. We had cardboard cut-outs of ourselves there for people to take pictures with instead of the usual photo booth (Yep-pictures to follow of that). And we also had a beer wagon (Yes, I said beer wagon). The bridal party rode on Cole’s cousin's boat for the party in between the ceremony and the reception. It was just a group of unhip 20-somethings with bad dance moves on a really big, really old boat, but if you drank enough and squinted, the in between party looked a lot like a grand R Kelly video (Drunken, squinty version of in between party).

Finally, our last “unusual” wedding detail was the ice cream truck. And yes folks that’s where we get to our I Guess I Do moment. Now, we got the idea from my parents to have an ice cream truck at our wedding because they had attended a graduation party with an ice cream truck and everyone loved it! Cole is much more of a pie person and I am more of a bag of chips kind of lady so we knew we didn’t want to do the “cake cutting”. We thought an ice cream truck full of goodies would be the best solution to satisfy our sweet tooth friends.

They could not recall the name of the company so I started googling around for local ice cream truck rentals. The company we used shall remain anonymous for the reasons you are about to be told. The company was very friendly on the phone and willing to accommodate any needs we had. However, I could not find any pictures associated with this company we were using. I figured it must be a “mom and pop” type business possibly new to the internet, I guess. We booked them and I explained that our “unusual reception” would be held at the marina and laid out the land for where the truck will be located.

The story is very unclear since we have heard multiple versions and everyone had hit the beer wagon or the special cocktails provided. Supposedly, as we were inside celebrating after our bridal party was announced and speeches were commencing the ice cream truck had some “technical difficulties.” As the woman who was driving the truck came to her designated parking space, she was not aware that a 45’ tall telephone pole was within her vicinity. As she backed up, she hit the telephone pole, the pole broke in half and landed directly on our videographer’s car. It completely demolished the back of his car. I apologize that I have no visual evidence of this, but we have yet to see any pictures of the incident.

Now, with some quick thinking family members, including my uncle who is an insurance agent and knew our videographer, we were able to talk him down from calling the police. Because if there was one thing we did not need, it was police arriving at our party before the sun had even set. Cole and I became aware of the incident, however, by the time we were told the story everything had already been handled. The ice cream truck workers apologized immensely and offered us lots of treats including Hawaiian ices which we lushly paired with our favorite spirits. One of the fine ice cream truck workers even offered for me to come back and make some ice cream. As Cole tried pushing me on the truck, I so kindly declined and informed Cole lovingly that if I have to go in this truck so did he.

We both continued on with talking to our loved ones and dancing the night away. Everything turned out amazing and we have countless people to thank. We felt so much love from our family and friends and it wouldn’t have been the spectacular night it turned out to be without them there. So my advice to any brides out there: 1) Don’t let your husband push you into a suspicious ice cream truck alone 2) Relax and enjoy every moment the day will fly by 3) Remember it’s all about the two of you beginning your lives together 4) Something will go bad that day whether it’s something small or an ice cream truck blasting top speed through a telephone pole to total your videographer’s car…shake it off, get a drink, boogie down, it will all get figured out.

My Go-To Wedding Gift

As I stated on Monday, no couple will ever complain if you give them cash! But if you are looking for something nice to wrap up in addition to that, my go-to gift is always to frame their wedding invitation.

Go to your local art store and buy nice card stock, layer it to create your matte. Then tape or glue their invitation to the center and place it in the frame. Voila! You've now created a custom framed invitation for the couple. Something that would likely taken them years to do after the wedding!

(I still haven't gotten around to framing our invitation suite...it's on the to-do list for 2015, along with working out.)

Have a great weekend UnBrides!

You Can't Go Wrong With Cash

When it comes to wedding gifts, you can't go wrong with cash. Save the registry gifts for the showers. No couple feels like lugging a big set of plates or a blender around while drunk after their wedding.

But then comes the million dollar question...how much?

Now this is just me personally, but at the very least I give a hundred dollars for both Kyle and I. And if either of us are in the wedding then I'll give two hundred.

It isn't until you have planned a wedding that realize just how expensive it is. Plates are at least fifty dollars a person, which is where I came up with my gift amount.

Only you know what you are comfortable with giving, it may be more, it may be less. But that is my general formula for all of the weddings I attend.

My mom also recently brought up about how we should give checks instead of cash, so you can make sure the couple gets it and cashes it. I think going forward I will follow through with her idea...

I know talking about money is awkward, although it is a standard when it comes to weddings. But I also think it's important not only to talk about how much a couple is spending on a wedding, but how much you are giving to them...

Tis the Season for Giving!

Happy Thanksgiving

These past couple of months, both personally and professionally, I have been reminded how lucky we all are to even be here. So this holiday season, it's time to cut out any extraneous bullshit there may be and just enjoy every single moment with the people who matter to you most.

Hoping your Thanksgiving is great however you may spend it!

Happy Birthday Husband

Just wanting to wish Kyle an early Happy Birthday which he celebrates tomorrow. Off to Target to pick up some candy, underwear, and socks. I always believe in giving the gift of necessities. Romantic, I know.

This picture was taken on our first date over 14 years ago and he's kept me laughing every day since.

Have a good one Husband!

Getting Ready Robes

Sometimes brides can forget yet another needed element of their wardrobe for the Big Day - their 'Getting Ready' attire. In my attempt to be fashion forward and cutting edge, I thought I would order an abstract print caftan from Bloomingdales online.

But as you can see, the final outcome ended up being a Technicolored Pterodactyl.

While snapping this picture Kyle couldn't keep a straight face. Needless to say it was immediately put back in the plastic packaging and returned. After much searching, I finally found the Josie by Natori robe that I wore on my wedding day at a Bloomingdales store. This time I made sure to try it on before I bought it. Who knew a robe could go so wrong.

And below are some of my picks for possible Getting Ready Robes for all of you! Hopefully they will leave you looking dynamite...not like a dinosaur in my case.

Holly & Randy : Ferrerfoto Photography

Meet Holly and Randy. Their wedding in the woods is one of the prettiest I've ever seen! The back drop was perfect as was every DIY detail, but one thing that wasn't so perfect was dun, dun dun...the weather. Enjoy Holly's entertaining I Guess I Do moments in her own words below!
...

Hi! I am so excited about sharing my I Guess I Do moments with the world! My name is Holly (Mittelmeier) Weakland and I am originally from Cleveland, Ohio and work in higher education. I have recently moved to Raleigh, North Carolina where my husband, Randy Weakland, accepted a new job in the Research Triangle (he is an engineer). I enjoy yoga, running, dancing, working with students, red wine, Netflix, Target, coffee, and NPR.

Randy and I actually met on Match.com while I was still living and working in Indiana. I had been on and off Match for a long time, and out of a moment of sheer vulnerability after breaking off yet another tumultuous entanglement with a friend from grad school, Randy emailed me. I knew I was heading back to Cleveland so I had changed my zip code to hopefully attract a lovely gent that would be waiting for me once I moved back. We took it slow and as Gwyneth would call it, entered into a “conscious coupling” and fell in love. He proposed in October of 2013 in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park at sunset.

Randy and I really enjoy the outdoors, so it was important to us to have some element of our wedding outside. In Ohio, that is slightly difficult no matter what time of year one chooses for the wedding. It can be blazing hot, raining, or really cool at any point from May-October. It was going to be a gamble no matter what! Luckily, we found a gorgeous barn venue in the middle of Mohican State Park where we were able to have elements both inside and outside, and would be able to have our ceremony inside if it rained (which of course, I put that thought out of my mind from the very get-go of planning, no matter what the ceremony was going to be outside). Planning was mainly enjoyable and fun, with a touch of stress and anxiety, but a lot of learning along the way. In order to keep myself sane, I promised myself that I would not get caught up in the stresses of planning this event, as it was the marriage that was so much more important.

The Cake.
Anyone that knows me well can tell you that I have a major sweet tooth. I especially love cake. I get excited for cake at any occasion, and will internally squeal with delight upon having cake that has my favorite kind of frosting. So obviously, I was extremely excited to taste and pick out MY own wedding cake. I scoured Pinterest for the designs I liked and based on a recommendation from a colleague on a bakery she used, we booked our first tasting appointment. I had previously given the owner designs I liked so she was going to have a quote for us. Little did I realize all the designs I liked had used fondant. Little did I also realize fondant is highly labor intensive and most people don’t even like the taste of fondant so they usually didn’t eat it with their slice of cake. She gave me the quote of $1300. $1300!!!! I was a bit taken back and then when I called my mom and informed her of the quote, her response validated that we needed to keep looking.

This had been my first planning roadblock so I was feeling sad and discouraged…were all cakes this expensive? Being pretty ignorant of the world of wedding cakes, I had no idea how much they usually went for. A few days later, my mom called me and told me she just watched a wedding-themed episode of The Chew that morning and Michael Symon said that “no-one should ever pay over $600 for a wedding cake.” Well, if you like food and are from Cleveland, Michael Symon truly knows best so I was going to use Michael’s advice. We ended up going with the bakery associated with our caterer, and they had great reviews on theKnot. Our tasting went well and she was able to create a texturized look with the icing that resembled fondant and EVERYONE LOVED THE CAKE and said it was some of the best cake they had ever tasted. Mission accomplished!

The Colors/Flowers.
My adventures in wedding colors, now that I look back on it, make me laugh because they seemingly took a journey all on their own and changed from the beginning to the finished product. Like many brides, I scoured Pinterest for hours in the initial planning stages, created color palettes, etc. The difficulty is, there are SO many beautiful color combinations out there and with the help of a little creativity and imagination, anything can be made to look fantastic and accomplish the overall vision the bride is wanting. The options were overwhelming and I had to set an hour limit to my Pinterest research or else a panic-induced anxiety attack would set in (okay, maybe not, but you all know what I mean). In my eyes, the colors set the whole tone for the wedding-they decided everything-the décor, flowers, dresses, cake, it all came back to the colors- so picking the wrong ones would be bad.

We had chosen Labor Day weekend, those days of passage signaling the end of summer to beginning of Fall….so to choose summery shades or autumn shades? Or maybe neglect both and do what I want? Maybe others would interpret summery shades for fall shades or vice versa? Criminy, this is awful. I went with my gut and chose the color palette I first really loved. Poppy tones of a peachy pink and dark eggplant/plum with a contrast of ivory and a sage green (Visit designseeds.com and you will see how specific one can get). I really love the dark, dreamy, victorian shades of purple and wear them often, but I was a little nervous because I wanted to stay away with brighter, royal shades of purple and hoped the two wouldn’t end up meeting somewhere in the middle.

Planning moved forward. I learned overtime that many have differing views on what eggplant is and had more wine-colored options or their version of eggplant was burgundy. No people-are you color blind? Burgandy and eggplant are two completely different colors. I was also really excited about my flowers. I had given my florist a couple different photos of bouquets I loved and we used her services for my sister’s wedding and my mom had referred her out to many family friends. She was extremely receptive to my vision of a elegant, yet rustic theme for my barn wedding and she set my nerves at ease. I kept encountering the same issue though-vendors never had the EXACT shade of dark purple I wanted to I had to make do with the options they had that were the closest. Invitations were designed, bridesmaid dresses were bought, tablecloths ordered-slowly, I knew the colors were changing a bit but I was also proud of all the crafting I was doing and slowly let go of my tight-fisted grasp of the color I wanted.

The wedding day finally comes and after I have on my dress and it is time for our first look photos, I go downstairs to get my bouquet since my florist had arrived. I walk down the stairs with anticipation to see all my gorgeous flowers and low and behold (incite Psycho theme music) PURPLE. All I see is purple. The color purple I did NOT want. BUT the flowers looked gorgeous in the wooden box centerpieces and looked perfect with everything else I had put together. I knew at that point there was absolutely nothing I could do about it so I smiled, hugged my amazing lady of a florist, smelled the sweet scents of my bouquet, and went to see my future husband so he could finally see me in my dress. Everything came together and all my trips to Michael’s and Pat Catans had paid off-my elegant, rustic vision blended wonderfully in the wooden barn, tucked deep in the Ohio forest. Second mission accomplished!

Rain.

Or as I call it, $#@&. They had been calling for a brief period of rain all morning of the wedding. I was internally panicking that my outside ceremony would not happen. I was hoping that it would be one of those normal Ohio days where the weather people call for thunderstorms all day but it ends up being sunny and bright instead. It was warm, but that nice warm between hot and cool. The previous day was HOT, around the low 90’s and the venue owners (Laura & Kevin) had said the wedding that took place the previous day was misery because of the heat, so I was grateful for the cooler temperature. Laura looks at the Doppler radar and says there is a little rain that will move through between 11-1, but we should be in the all clear afterwards.

Our first look is supposed to be at 1:15 and photos will be until 3:30, so we should be in the clear. Our first look session was under grey skies and just as we were walking into the woods for some more photos, it starts to drizzle. Kevin offers to drive me through the woods on his very muddy looking John Deere cart, and lays a towel down for me so I wouldn’t get dirty. Paul (our photog) and Randy follow, and by the time we get to the area we want, it starts to nearly pour. Paul & Randy keep a towel over my head as I hold my lace train so it doesn’t get muddy. I internally scream bloody murder. This is NOT what I had in mind for our photos! One of the main reasons Randy and I chose this venue was because of its natural beauty and all the amazing opportunities for photos. We elected to not do engagement photos to save money, so this was our one shot! I want to cry and throw a brick at something, but I collect myself and we go back to the barn to do some photos there and wait it out. It stops after about 20 minutes and we are able to go back out and do the rest of the photos we wanted.

The ceremony gets set up outside under brief intermittent periods of drizzle. Everyone keeps telling me to calm down and the sun will come out. Sure enough, it stops raining before guests arrive and the sun comes out as our pastor declares us husband and wife. I felt like Princess Kate when the sun came out when she stepped out of her car to go into the Cathedral to marry William! (Sorry for the dramatic analogy, but I love Princess Kate and was one of those crazy women that woke up at 2am to watch their wedding on TV). Interestingly enough, as soon as all of us sat down to dinner inside the barn, it poured and thundered on and off for an hour and was insanely humid the rest of the night, but none of us cared. Third mission accomplished!

Cue Cheesy Music.
So all in all, it was a wonderful experience. And here comes my Danny Tanner moment-when I look at Randy, all I feel is gratitude and happiness for finding “my person” and being with the love of my life. We never would have imagined we would find ourselves in NC a mere year after him proposing, and here we are-living our first life adventure together. The wedding happened just the way it was supposed to, and just as many brides told me post-wedding, the small stresses and worries just DO NOT MATTER at the end of the day. You found the person you are supposed to grow old with! Can’t get much better than that! <3

Life Happens

As I've come to find these past couple of months, while all of your lists may be checked, and your T’s are crossed, nothing can prepare you for the unpredictable and unexpected road ahead. As much as we like to plot and plan for everything to be perfect, sometimes life happens.

And the same can be said for weddings. All of your visions and tireless months of planning may all change in a single day. I have had friends who’ve scrapped plans because of a father’s pending liver transplant, or who have drastically had to scale back because of the loss of a job.

The fact is, we cannot control what happens, but we can control how we react to what happens. Kyle and I have already looked at all of the ways we can scale back. Are the expensive gym memberships, the dry cleaning, and the endless amounts of dinners out really worth it? When the servers at your favorite Mexican joint know your life story – you know you eat out too much!

So if unexpected situations arise during your wedding planning process, be proactive rather than reactive. Sometimes stepping aside and taking a realistic look at ways you can cut back will not only help yourselves, but your pocketbooks. The personalized favors, the boutonnieres, the custom napkins, the welcome bags…all are nice, but all add up.

In the end, when it comes to both weddings and life, even though you may have to strip away all of the excess, you’ll find that there is still much to be grateful for.

Happy Halloween

Kyle hates Halloween. Not just because he screams like a school girl in haunted houses (and uses me as a human shield - should I be concerned about this?), but he also hates the fact that this holiday gives me the excuse to dress up like a dude.

I've been a dwarf, a deer, a Douche Bag (I wore a YOLO hat), Duck Dynasty, etc. But my favorite of all time was Captain Jack Sparrow. I was bartending at Trotter's, the bar I worked at in college, and this is how I greeted customers throughout the night. It also so happened to be the first time I met my best friend from college's future husband. What can I say? I'm all about first impressions.

Kyle will be so pissed I posted this picture, but I don't care. I hope my future daughter grows up to be like me and would rather sport beards than be a slutty cop or nurse.

Being a sluttypants only takes you so far my friends. Trust me, dressing up as a man for Halloween may just land you one. They know it can only go uphill from there...

Have a Happy Halloween everybody!

Fall Inspiration

Although I am a sucker for the Christmas holiday, Fall is by far my favorite season of the year. Even though my version of fall is now sitting in air conditioning during yet another heat wave, I tried to make up for it by buying everything pumpkin in sight at Target. Have a you tried the pumpkin Oreo's yet? Delish. But I'm thinking about duct taping the bag shut.

Here are some of my favorite trends and ideas I'm seeing for fall this year...

1. No-Bake Pumpkin Cheesecake  2. Caramel Apple Jello Shots  3. Spiced Apple Cider  4. Gold Leaf Place Cards          5. Studded Pumpkins  6. Hanging Mason Jar Chandelier
